Why do Chinese people eat a lot of pork? It's just because the production cost of pork is low and the price is relatively cheap.
Wrong stereotype: Chinese eat (like) pork more than most other countries.
Fact: The love of pork in many European countries is unparalleled.
On the leaderboard, you can’t see Asian countries at all, all in Europe.
Pork is not special in China:
Chinese not only consume the most pork but also consume the most sheep meat, fish, poultry, eggs, vegetables, fruits, rice, wheat, beans, potatoes, apples, watermelons, tea leaves, peppers, etc.
Population size: China has 1.383 billion people.
Population of China (13.8)> Total Population of Developed Countries (12.1)
Let’s compare four types of protein:
beef, pork, fish, and birds (chicken, duck, and goose)
There are several reasons why pork is more commonly consumed in China than beef and mutton. One reason is that pork is typically less expensive than beef and mutton, as pigs are easier to raise and have a shorter life cycle than cows and sheep. Additionally, pork has a long history of being a staple in Chinese cuisine, and there are many traditional dishes that feature pork as the main ingredient. Additionally, there is a cultural preference for pork as it is seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Another reason is that China has a large population and relatively limited land resources. Pork is more efficient to produce than beef and mutton, as pigs can be raised in smaller spaces and fed with food waste. Beef and mutton production, on the other hand, requires more land and resources. As a result, pork is more accessible and affordable for the average Chinese person.
Chinese are generally lactose intolerant. That will reduce the utility of raising cattle and raising cost for its consumption.
Many Chinese are vegetarian and some for religious reasons. China imports lot of beef too, ask the Australians, they know.
I have become friends here on the west coast with some recent Chinese immigrants they often invite me over for dinner, and, they almost always prepare mutton with hot spicy peppers!
I was confused by this being their from China" Hot spicy mutton?? But, they said this is the main dish in their hometown!
I never really even liked lamb until I eat theirs!
What are ordinary Chinese? The cuisine that the people eat has been based on the region of China. Most of the Chinese cuisine I am familiar with is Cantonese, Hunan, and Sichuan which are in the South East. In the regions like Outer Mongolia meat is more prent than in the south east. In fact China produces more beef than the entire European unx, and is number three behind the United States and Brazil. It is the number 2 country in beef consumption after the United States and ahead of the entire European unx. In 2019 Chinese ate about 5.8 kg per person, which is about half of the Untied States.

Cows were massively used in agriculture. They were used to drag different gears and machines. Killing cows is really not a smart decision overall. It is like lighting your car on fire to make a bonfire. As a result, beef eating isn’t really thing in both China and Japan until mordern era.
Pigs are easy to raise. They basically eat anything. You can feed them vegetables, meat, wild plants, and a human foot. They will eat it. And nowadays, you can raise a pig to 200 pounds in half a year easily. Easy job.
Only if you have large rivers, ponds around or you live next to sea, you can then develop your fishing industry. That means it is heavily dependent on climate and geography.
魚(yú)類(lèi):
Before mordern industry is involved in agriculture, birds grow slowly. Why?
Chicken only eat plants;
ducks need water;
and goose, the hardest to raise, needs grass.
禽類(lèi):
雞只吃植物;
鴨子需要水;
What’s more is that they all grow slower than pigs. Geese can be around 15 pounds, ducks are smaller, and chicken are smallest.
But I am not saying they are worthless. Birds cam have eggs regularly. That is their strongest advantage. Eggs are nutritious, easy to store, and most importantly, they come fast. That makes chicken one of the most important animals in human history.
So pigs are easier raise. They eat a lot. They grow fast. They eat everything. Their meat has lots of fat, which provides lots of energy. They are of course loved by agricultural countries like China and Japan.
In addition to the excellent answer by JC Hou, I would like to add a few more points.
1.Pig is a traditional animal which has been raised for meat for thousands of generations by the Chinese. Even the Chinese character ‘family’ 家 has a pig symbol.
3.With the influence of European cultural standard, eating dogs is now seen as ‘a(chǎn)bnormal’ and eating beef is now seen as ‘normal’ but in ancient China, the reverse is true. Eating beef is still not accepted.

Not true. Italians eat a lot of pork, especially cured pork. English eat a lot of sausages. Americans, of course bacon and ham. South Americans and Spanish, a lot of pulled pork and Asado Puerco. Everywhere in the world, pork is eaten a lot. Why? Easy to raise and nutritious.
The most popular reason for pork is that it's best to cook.
Mutton and beef have a strong smell.
Chicken lacks aroma.
It needs better technology to make it delicious.
Pork tastes best after heating and is the easiest to handle.
1.Less saturated: Compared to some other meats like beef and mutton, pork has lesser amount of saturated fat. Contrary to the popular belief, pork is actually less fattening than beef and mutton.
2.Versatile: Pork could be cooked in many ways, there are about more than 100 Chinese pork recipes as what I recalled.
3.Easy to cultivate: Pigs are easier to cultivate in the agricultural country like China. Southern part of China is the most ideal place for pig cultivation.
But then again, pork isn’t the only meat which is popular in China. Other meats like beef and mutton are also popular in China, although beef and mutton are more popular at the northern part of China and the western part of China.
If the proportion of French plains in the total land area educed to almost the same as China, French people may like eating pork as well as beef and mutton, just like the Germans.
Yes, beef is a tad more expensive than pork.
But I earn enough such that that small price difference means little to me.
I don’t eat beef and mutton for the simple reason that I rarely ate beef and mutton while growing up.
My parents were in charge of meal planning.
In 100 meals, there might have been maybe 5 of those meals that featured a bit of beef.
In 100 meals, there were 0 meals with mutton/lamb.
So when I struck out on my own, I just never cooked beef or mutton/lamb.
And I almost never order it, at least for myself, when dining out with friends.
This is a common take-away/take-out meal if I’m too busy to rustle up my own meal.
Pork and chicken (and always that one stem of green veg…)
About a month back, a friend of mine told me she was headed back to her hometown in Xinjiang for the long weekend. She invited me to join her and I happily accepted.
We had 架子肉 (shelf meat?) for dinner.
To me, I could only handle like one piece before calling it quits.
And that was me taking the smallest piece.
My friend had to take some of it back to her family.
Which her family was thrilled with, of course.
They grew up eating a lot of beef and lamb, so for them, what we brought back with us was barely a snack.
All gone within minutes.

The cheese is great, much better than goat cheese, for instance, but what's wrong with the milk?
I think that's why they designed A2 milk as apparently, they removed the part that creates lactose intolerance in people. It would have been nice to know as a kid, but for those of us, Goats milk became the go to milk.

Bear in mind China is almost the size of Europe, while it is absolutely true that some area in China rarely eat lamb or beef, most likely you met people from particular area from China. Also, chicken and pork is more eco-friendly than beef. Producing 1 kg of beef requires more feed and more carbon emissions than 1 kg of pork; and chicken is better than pork. so you’re saving the environment :D
I can also add that I live in Norway, and I think my kids are pretty much raised on the same meat ratios as you were in China - mostly pork and chicken. We have a few mutton meals every year because I like it, but I usually also make pork sausages for the kids because they don’t like the taste of lamb.
One thing though, you didn’t mention fish. Is that not something that is commonly eaten in your part of China?

This is true, at least from my experience. I once regularly ate pork. But after many years of living in the middle east (mostly in saudi arabia, among others), where pork is either downright illegal or very hard to get or gratingly expensive, it just faded away from my mind’s choices. Shopping with a sibling in o canada, she observed that I was not putting any pork products in the cart. This was not deliberate on my part and until she pointed it out, I wasn’t aware of the fact. The (food) choices around you does influence what you are hankering after, even if subtly.
Beef does require more feed, but the benefit is that we can feed them the waste from processing grains like wheat and even rice. They do eat more, but they are often eating the waste plant matter that humans or other animals can not eat, so beef is not as bad as people think. Its mostly the way its farmed today that is bad for the environment, but that is pretty much everything humans do.

I have been to Chinese restaurants specialising in northern Chinese (north of Shanghai) food. Trust me, lamb and beef are far more common on their menu - in northern Chinese provinces’ cooking lamb and beef dominate to the point that chicken and sometimes pork is less common.
Yes in Shandong I had Lamb very often and it was really fantastic (especially in a restaurant in Zibo many years ago)
Mutton is standard staple for Muslins like Hui and .....r. By the questioner’s standard, they must be either rich or people with special privileges in China
I think duck is the worst, aromatic-wise …
Duck got gamey taste, similar to pigeon.
Where I live in America beef has become a lot more expensive than chicken or pork, and these days I rarely buy it. Chicken and pork is mostly what I cook also, and I can’t remember ever having bought mutton or lamb. I have occasionally bought ground beef for spaghetti or hamburgers, but not recently.

As an american born living my whole life here. American meat is 2–3 times more than the past decade. Its getting expensive. Ive read china is more affordable.
I can empathize. I never ate domesticate meats until my father stopped hunting when I was 12. I didn’t like the blandness of domesticated meats (beef, pork, lamb) so I tried to go vegan for a year. That lasted until I was served a properly seasoned T-bone steak.

I know the feeling; I can’t eat mutton or beef either. I’ll eat a tiny bit to be polite, but more will give me stomach cramps. I think it’s because I was vegetarian for so long that I lost the enzyme to digest them. Chicken, fish I can handle, and ostrich which is like a beef but lighter in taste. It’s excellent in a stir fry with greens and onions. No pork for heritage reasons, which lemme tell you is tricky when the rest of the household is Chinese
It’s interesting how the most digestible and desired catfood I buy for my cats is pork-based. They will pass up beef, mutton, and even chicken for the pork one. I think most pork is richer in nutrients than these other meats, and my cats find it easier to digest. Far fewer throw-up incidents when eating the chicken-based food with them.
