We’d be mental to feel we have to choose a side. We can have productive relationships with both. Our country is in an economic death spiral and being positioned between the two can be economically beneficial and help restore some soft power
I really hope keir is just saying this the further leverage against the EU in negotiations. Because once keir declares he chooses the EU trump will lash out and we'll have no choice and lose our brief window of bargaining power.
But then again I've repeatedly over estimated keir
The EU are also in a position of weakness right now. They need us, Britain needs them. If they want to vindictively punish Britain for leaving, that is their choice but don't complain when far right fascist dicks become the party of choice for a lot of people.
Considering the EU has a big problem with far right government, I would have thought keeping Britain on side makes sense.
Regardless of Brexitiers and remainers, I think we can all agree Trump is a fucking nutcase.
But a nutcase in charge of the world's largest economy. Starmer has a very hard job ahead of him walking that tightrope and I don't envy him at all.
And when Trump insists we start buying Trump brand water and that we lift the ban on Cyber trucks being driven on our roads, then what?
We need to pick a side, because sitting on the fence means we'll get shit from everyone.
Picking a side openly is just going to make things worse for us. No country would voluntarily get into an economic war before it needs to. You don’t see Australia saying “we side with Canada!” Because even if they think that and are having trade talks with them behind closed doors, it’s a stupid move.
Countries that thread the needle of neutrality are the ones that come out the best. While I think we would be dumb to expect he won’t put his crosshairs on us, if we can keep him sweet, it allows us to make moves behind the scenes (like the talks we are having with the EU).

Fair enough. I don't disagree at all, but we will end up being forced to pick a side sooner or later, and it'll be because one of our "allies" has forced an ultimatum on us.
Personally I think we are better picking a side now. Any ultimatum will come with shitty terms
You see India buying all that sweet discounted oil from Russia and growing their economy with it for the last few years?
Why we constantly feel that we have to be the national equivalent of Robb Stark I will never know.
Doing the 100% moral thing all the time is not a virtue if it harms your people. It’s almost like we think just being nice will increase our chances of victory.
To be honest the longer we can hold off choosing a side, so to speak, the better. Trump is volatile and unpredictable if we are seen to reject him he will retaliate. The EU as counterparts are probably going to be far more forgiving and patient.
The EU is the right choice for future partnerships, but we can’t let the Americans know that.
Choose the EU you fool. It’s clear that the US is completely untrustworthy and we need to take it seriously and renew and build other alliances. The EU, is a natural partner.
We should choose sensible. We should choose the adults in the room. We should choose Europe.
