The whole of India gets fewer foreign tourists than tiny Singapore. Think hard about that. It’s not organised chaos… just chaos…

China, England and for that matter most countries have areas which are as dirty as India's Difference is that while dirty places constitute less than 10% the rest 90% are clean & neat. In india the dirty places constitute 90% while clean places are less than 10%.. So there is no comparision. Your contention that Swacch Bharat is a success is totally off. My perception as a citizen living in India is that this place is more dirt than it was 10 years back.
Those photos of China were taken at least 20 years ago. Something is very strange. You don't look for the reasons for your shortcomings and try to change them, however you use photos of other countries 20 years ago to convince yourself is not that bad. How can you make India better with this kind of thinking ?

Issue is that people in India mostly consider cleaning as inferior work or work that is least appreciated. Homes are mostly cleaned by elder women in home or servent. Even at home it is ok to make the place dirty for some else to clean. At home someone does it as there is no other option. Outside no one does it and Government does not have the resources or will to clean as it is not rewarding and people have to take effort to not make the place dirty. I am struggling to educate my kids to do it, but is loosing. I am unable to impose penalties at home, but expect Gov to impose penalty. Maybe rewarding would work.
The creator of this video is more worried about phrases and is in denial. I've been to India in 2007 and 2023 the bus stations don't seem to have been cleaned properly nor refurbished since they were built (perhaps late 1970's). Same for shop fronts that look like the were built in the 1930's and never be refurbished or cleaned (inside many are ok).
No pavements, open sewers and ditches were common on side roads as were piles of rubbish (they don't have house to house waste collection). The Ganges is referred to as the 'Holy River' in which people bathe and wash their clothes but it's full of sewage, chemicals, human and animal remains !! They still can't clean it despite many attempts - it shows some of the Indian mindset and is embarrassing.

Earlier this year I was staying in a condo not far from the beach in Goa. One morning on our way to the beach the path and surrounding area was littered with empty liquor and beer bottles and plastic cups from an overnight drinking session. These young adults obviously had no pride in the cleanliness of the environment in which they lived. To solve this problem education about the health benefits of personal and environmental cleanliness and hygiene has to be taught in Schools starting in first Grade all the way to University.
Ignorance is our biggest problem. Most of us don't the truth about our own country or know any other way of doing things than how they are doing. Also, we are extremely gullible and so, very easily misled. The comments here will prove that. The other major problem is the ritualistic mindset, some call it tradition, which blocks all new ideas.
Well presented with good intention.
Eliminating the term “organised chaos” has little to do with lack education in civic sense & civic responsibilities as citizens. Call it what yu will, We Indians need less democracy & more affirmative action without considerations of caste, religion & politics. Doing the “right” thing, not necessarily “popular” is an essential ingredient for success, respect & self-worth.
When your religion teaches you that the world is an illusion and a prison to be escaped from, then most might wonder why they should bother improving this prison, which includes cleaning up their streets.

you explained this concept very well , where there is garbage , people unconsiously through more garbage , spitting dosent occur inside a mall bcz there will be a fine and arrest for that , the fear is also neccesary
Stating organized chaos isn't the solution to the problem. At least sympathy works for the people and government of India that tourists haven't published dirtiness that goes around every parts of India on social media. Let's not compare the dirtiness of other countries, rather try to resolve the dirt of own country. This perception might be helpful to drive forward attitude of every nationals to make the country clean. Keep the motive clear and teach others and influence other by act how to clean the environment rather than comparing the dirt of other countries. The dirt of other countries don't last for long and are very minimal in degree to the dirt the India has. 70% of the surface water is polluted in India. There is a higher degree of dirtiness in restaurants, shops, rivers, and railways in India.
Lee Kuan Yew cleaned up Singapore within three years of taking power. Spitting, littering and unhygienic practices were subject to heavy fines. They even policed public toilets to ensure that people washed their hands. Of course it helped that the government provided the toilets or required businesses to build them in the first place. Singapore is now one of the cleanest and healthiest countries on earth.

The photo from England is VERY rare I think people can ignore bins. But it's looked down upon. I've lived all over UK all my life never seen anything close to that bad. I did spot an Indian family few years ago fly tipping all their garbage even th council provide big bins. No disrespect to that family maybe they needed to be shown. We have problem with our own fly tippers too and they have no excuse. Our rivers don't look like that we don't have massive disease problems for a reason. Pooping in the street doesnt help the health of your kids. Also basic hygiene with street food.
Heavy fines do fuckall. I'm sad to admit that we never really understood our system of government and needed to be kept on a tight leash with brutalist laws holding borderline inhumane punishments for a while after independence to really appreciate what we have. Indians respond to the laws of brutality; caning, heavy fines, public shaming, human rights abuses. We are not a people who can be dealt with gently.
It seems to me the problem is with character/integrity, self respect, and common courtesy. You cannot tell me the "broken window" theory drives men to pee all over walls in public spaces. The whole rest of the world did away with diapers by the time they were two, and are capable of holding it until they are at a designated place.

I have noticed that in India, almost no local customers take their trays and rubbish to the bins/area provided in fast food joints. Is this cultural? In Australia the vast majority of customers clean up after themselves before leaving.
We have seen change happen during common wealth games.
Also the maintenance of NDMC areas.
Delhi metro is another example so change is possible.
But go down NH8 from Gurugram to Jaipur, you will find a lot of policemen stopping cars with RJ or UP plates and checking papers while not stopping people on wrong side .
I think as an Indian telling others are dirty doesn't make India cleaner.
On the other hand teaching Children in primary classes cleanliness who in turn can also teach their parents cleanliness would definitely help.
That is the only way the country will become clean.
We on the other hand teach them STEM subjects and problem solving. But does not provide them infrastructure to put their learning in practice. So they leave and India remains what it already is a failure.
It’s too bad that India is allowed to degrade to such a level. Individual pride as citizens will be a start, but the government has to have the resolve to lead the way by ensuring all levels of governing bodies are accountable. Corruption has to be tackled seriously so that the average citizen don’t perceive that some privileged people can easily get away with wrong doing. Cleaning up is the responsibility of everyone not just because the old caste system delegated it to the ‘untouchables’. Wishing India to its deserved greatness in the future.

The picture of lookalike Modhi sweeping up rubbish is priceless. You're an obvious apologist for what is clearly a total breakdown of governance education ,order and common decency and it's certain with increased population and other pernicious influences like rampant greed and corruption that the entire country will and is collapsing into anarchy.
I thought this very interesting. I have no first hand knowledge of India but the picture of chaos and, well, squalor in some places is quite a familiar one. Your words tell ne that the problem is very real and that serious government programs are needed to solve this.
While the picture of (I think) London with piles of rubbish in the street is not unknown here, it is unusual. London is generally pretty clean. That's not to say there are no other signs of deprivation here. We do have homelessness, addiction problems and many areas struggling economically and are pretty grim.
Good luck with your project but next time we play you in cricket, England will be avenged!
Perhaps the leaders of India, and their families, at all levels, should be seen to clean up outdoors. Set an example for the people. Set aside one day a week for cleaning up outdoors, no matter what caste one is. Make cleanliness a point of pride. Also, teach people it is expected that they will clean up after themselves.
Dear sir! You did intellectualize a problem which is pretty much our second nature??
India is chaos period! And that admission should be the start point of fixing it.
Swatch bharat was "half baked" as it did not solve the issues end to end.. it provided excellent optics for the government, yet made little long standing changes on the ground.
The problem is this: utter lack of necessary infrastructure for waste collection, disposal and/or recycling. The second part is the citizen responsibility of segregation, cooperating with standardized collection etc. The government used entire media machinary to fix the citizens end of responsibilities without doing anything about the civic / local bodies end. The result is that we are as trashy as we were in 2014, probably worse.
My personal feeling is that public health is more important than personal hygiene. Of course, this does not mean that personal hygiene is not important, mainly because I am a lazy person, but at least I should strive not to damage public health. I can't imagine living in a city like a garbage dump, is it still considered alive?
I am pleased to see that many Hollywood superstars recently exposed, such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, and others, also have poor hygiene habits, bad breath, body odor, and so on. They have everything except for good hygiene habits

Dude, "look, other countries are bad as well" is the most BS excuse. I live abroad, have travelled to bunch of countries and watch travel videos of all countries all the time. India is not a dirty country. India is beautiful in terms of flora and fauna but it has waste management issues. That's because cleaning ?? ?? a city requires a lot of time and resources. Politicians don't have time for that because elections here take place in every 5 years. Cleaning a city is a long-term process. It can take more than a decade to clean an entire city inside out. But since the elections in India take place in every 5 years, the politicians have to focus on short-term goals in order to win elections. That's one of the problem.
