It was a hit but it was a MEGA hit in China. One of china greatest stories was bound to be a hit with them. I think it's along the same lines of why Ne Zha has done so well.

WoW's lasting legacy is not because of its metacritic review or the quality, which people dogged on because it's servers were crap.
Wukong is the
1. 1st single player Chinese AAA title
2. 1st AAA Wukong game
3. 1st AAA Chinese themed title
4. 1st game from a tiny Indie studio with a tiny budget
5. 1st Chinese AAA title that succeeded without micro transactions or some other monetization method.
This could have easily been a commerical failure, and if the game were Balatro it just wouldn't have that much of an impact. The technical faults are real but so is the spectacle that has propelled it to substantial fame in China. The numbers matter.
More importantly than the game, however, is how it is changing the market. Because of Wukong, other Chinese studios making single player games like like Phantom Blade 0 and Wuchang are getting a second wind. Major investors like Tencent and NetEase are pulling investments abroad to find the next Game Science.
There will be a flood of AAA single player games set in China made in China, and they will point to Wukong as the game that opened the gates.

HMM, it was pretty special to me. I have never seen a game to have like 90 bosses and around 80 of them to be completely unique, and amazingly animated as well.
I love elden ring, probably my favourite open world game ever, but it has like 5-6(?) bosses that you only fight once.
Elden ring is a better game pound for pound but wukong did something amazing. Also it was very fun to play and explore.

Agreed. I think it had the best boss fights of the year and I played and enjoyed both Elden rings DLC and rebirth. It had its issues like not enough combos or invisible walls but Reddit loves the narrative that this game is just average when it has some of the coolest bosses I’ve ever seen/fought against. IMO It’s also the only game that rivals FF16 on the spectacle level of an eikon fight even if they don’t last as long some of the bosses are downright a feast for the eyes. They really nailed the visual presentation and it’s a hell of a first effort for a studio, Chinese or not.
It’s unfortunate that because of where the game was made there’s going to be comments on both sides of the culture war that kind of dilutes the overall discussion of the game and makes it harder to have an honest conversation about the game itself.

Yeah this is the only game where I’ve still yet to meet one person who played it. I’m not convinced the only reason it got so much acclaim is simply because Chinese people felt proud of this game. But side by side, it looks like a less fun version of GOW (granted Animal people freak me out so I’m really not the market for this game).
