We are traveling to my dad's family who live in southern Anhui. First we visited a small village that traditionally holds the Chinese Fish Lantern Festival. A parade with fish lanterns that supposedly bring fortune to someone who touches the head and tail of the fish.
Then we went to China's most famous mountain: Yellow Mountain which is known by its "sea of clouds". The first attempt didn't go as planned. But the second attempt turned out to be much better.

My grandmother was born in Shexian at the foot of the Yellow mountain, yet she never climbed it until we arranged a family trip, which sounds really amusing to me. She told me that she spent her childhood in a big traditional wooden mansion where generations of the whole family lived. There were also families of animals sharing the attic with them.
The mountain's most impressing scene to me is actually a foggy weather after the rain when we arrived. Everything was so fresh and quiet with a strong sense of Zen feeling. Btw I really love M tofu of HuiZhou. I believe it's a rare dish outside of the province.

no, the mountains in avatar is called Zhangjiajie, which is in Hunan province (you can search it on youtube). this Yellow mountain is in Anhui province, two different place. china has quite some spetacular mountains.

I should add this to every video. I have only recently stumbled upon this channel. Many thanks to the producer.. She could have simply chosen to get a regular and safe job in Shanghai, as her grandfather wanted her to, according to an early video I saw... But instead she has chosen to take the road less travelled, to travel to so many beautiful and hard to reach places and regions of China and to show people the beauty and charm of the country and its people. She also seems to be travelling long distances all alone, along difficult roads, suffering hardships during travel, while talking on her video camera.. So much enthusiasm ! This channel equals and is even better than so many Travel Shows and channels I've seen in the past.
Please continue to be careful in your travels, Meimei. Maybe you should take a holiday outside China for a change, not for work, just to relax, and no video production..

I visited Anhui in my first year as a university professor (in Beijing) and stayed in the hotel atop Huangshan and trekked all over. I also visited a small farm village and saw how humble the farmers life is. I now teach Chinese culture and history in Canada and I never stop talking about how wonderful China is, and my time in Anhui.

And so our tour guide Yan, as promised, up the Yellow Mountain the next day. Kudos to Flo for learning Mandarin. I am taking classes, but having a partner who helps would be awesome. I have noted before that when someone asks Yan a question about Flo's origins, she directs the question to Flo to answer, often to the surprise of the questioner. Good work both of you doing that! Practise by speaking a language is the best way to learn. I once had a very surreal encounter with a Parisienne dress-shop owner, in which she spoke English to me, and I French, to her, for our mutual benefit. I may never forget that meeting. It was funny, useful and well-motivated all at the same time.

I was there in mid-October 2024 on a regular Wednesday and it was just as crowded. I also stayed in Tangkou. The owner of the hotel where I was staying said that on that particular Wednesday there were 5,000 entrance tickets given away for free, which explains the crowd. The queue for the cable car down was extremely long. I waited over an hour to get on the cable car. On my next visit to HuangShan, I will hike down the back of the mountain like you showed here.

Living in China for 4 years I found there was nothing the Chinese liked more then a festival. It seemed like there was a festival every 3 or 4 days of some kind!!!

Another wonderful video. My wife dragged me to the Yellow mountains when I was 70 and after a day walking up and down the mountains, I had to go on my hands and knees to reach the White Goose hotel.

Chinese celebrate the mountains. I used to see the mountain road which are build without destroying the beauty and scale of mountains. The red colour, indeed, attracts much than other colours. The video makes me to visit China by walk, it is a land of beauty by nature.

Mount Huangshan has been listed by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site. The snow scenery on Huangshan is beautiful, but I prefer it when there is no snow. During such times, you can see the pine trees and rugged, unique rocks of Huangshan. The sea of clouds and the sunrise on Huangshan are truly some of the most magnificent natural wonders in the world. Thank you for sharing, Yan. You are an excellent traveler, and I hope to see more of your travel diaries this year.
