Flo and I set off on an adventure to Mount Huashan, China's steepest and most thrilling mountain, renowned for its infamous plank walk—a challenge we were eager to take on. Unfortunately, the walk was closed for maintenance, leaving us to admire the mountain’s breathtaking scenery from other trails.
From Huashan, we traveled to Sanmenxia, a lesser-known gem in Henan Province, nestled along the Yellow River. This hidden city is home to remarkable cave dwellings dating back to the Qing Dynasty—underground homes built beneath the earth, offering a glimpse into a unique and ancient way of life.

Chinese peoples' character are just mind blowing, from building structures on top of stiff mountain to coming up with idea building underground house due to limited house building materials, each different challenge in different regions are solved with human ingenuity!

How do elderly Chinese people have so much energy? I think the young guy with the Grandma might have been carrying her shopping. The Grandpa was such a perfect guide - so lucky to have found him. I like how the iron fences on the mountain were decorated with red streamers and not just left bare. I feel sure that Chinese engineers can build a path to any location, maybe even a literal 'stairway to heaven' if they tried. I also spotted two cats which is always a bonus. It's been a tough week at work so thank you Yan & Flo for this wonderful half hour therapy session!!

Another amazing video Yan and Flo!!!! The most enjoyable, fun thing for me to do while living in China was to go to the antique market each week and bargain with the merchants!!! I bought so many things I did not want or need just to bargain with them.
Flashing numbers with their fingers, clutching their heart like you are giving them a coronary and finally resignation as they shake hands and ask you not to come back!!!! Just delightful. The grandfather who invited you into his home was a perfect example of the kindest, most noble people in the world, the elderly Chinese. Great video, you have made me miss China with all my heart!!!

I can see why Huashan is a sacred mountain...it is beyond breathtaking, in every sense of the word! I couldn't believe the sheer drops, the trees growing right out of the stone, a 71yo grandma walking those steps, a cat hanging out on a bench (5:44), and houses built into the sides. All of it is simply mind boggling! Then back down to ground level and a friendly grandpa giving us a wonderful tour of his unique underground home...what a delight! Thank you, Yan and Flo, for taking us along on your fantastic journeys to places I'll never get to see in person!

I've lived near Sanmenxia over 10 years and visited those houses a handful of times but I have never seen much about them in travel blogs etc. You got some golden info from that old gentlemen and answered a few things I've always wondered about. I last went out to those houses probably 2 years ago and there were quite a few of them still in use, although the number is rapidly dropping. Hopefully you are coming to Luoyang soon!

I'm amazed at all the houses or buildings up top of that steep mountain. Do people live up there? Yan, maybe a year ago or more, you took a cliff walk. I remember it well! You did it solo holding on to chains affixed to the rock cliff & you were pretty scared, but you did it!

Just when I thought I could not be amazed anymore you came up with this, the drone shots are stunning. I couldn't help but think of all the workers who put the infrastructure in place to make your climb possible and the hardships they endured to complete this amazing climb.
In South Australia we also have a town 'Coober Pedy'with underground homes mostly in converted disused opal mines housing nearly half the towns population of 2000 residents. Just like the town China the underground caves stay cool in the oppressive summer heat.

Before Grandpa came in, I thought the reason why people built their home in the underground is because it is cooler in the ground. However, his explanation makes a lot of sense.

What a great video you gave us today. I very much enjoyed the hike but especially the interview with Grandpa even though I am older than him. It is a shame that we miss the wisdom and experiences of our elders by not taking time just to sit and talk to them. I wish I had taken more time to really get to know my great and grandparents. Huashan, I would not ever go up those steps so I thank you both for the sacrifice, it is incredible how one can build on what looks like the top of the world. Yan, you were so cute this week and great job getting up the mountain. Particularly because you had to take 4 steps for every 2 that Flo took. Speaking of Flo, you need to start keeping some Red Bull or 5 hour energy around to kick start him in the morning:-) anyway what a beautiful mountain that was you can find some eco homes built into the ground near Taos New Mexico not far from where I live, although nothing quite as big as the one you visited and outside of Death Valley, miners built their homes into cliff faces for similar reasons as you showed us this week. Another great episode:-)
