It is a nightmare for the Chinese government trying to work out which company to pour subsidies into because each EV brand is trying to outdo one another ! So while the "state subsidies" claim may have some weight in it, it is the endless competition between EV manufacturers in China that really drives the game.

1000 KW is insane. In an apartment building of 350 units, you can't have every one charging simultaneously. The demand would be insane. Since it charges in 10 minutes, 350 cars needs 3500 minutes. 58 hours in sequence. Let's say system can service 10 cars charging at once. That could be brought down to 5.8 hours approximate. That is 10 x1000 KW, still an enormous demand. Something is wrong or may be it is 10 MW of demand. Help!

I am wondering whether we need that much fast charging, considering how most of EV usage/charging is done at home. While I like the fact that EV charging is now faster than filling up with liquid (fossil) fuels, it really is more of a selling point than a real advantage, most of the time. I also think it is necessary to kill part of the FUD/BS around BEVs but still, my question remains.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to charge that fast when I need to, which would be incredibly rare for me most of the year, if at all.
Last time we used fast charging during a road trip, we really didn't need to but it was convenient and the 350 kW Ionity charger near Perth (Scotland) did a great job at topping up the battery in a very short time (we hadn't finished our coffee catch-up, so I had to move the car out mid coffee). In the entire month we travelled through Europe, we only needed fast charging about 3 times (in addition to the Ionitiy charge), all in the Netherlands (our apartment didn't have EV charging options yet) and we had FastNed close by.
Despite the capacity of the car and charger it charged much slower than the capacity limit, probably due to local grid (charger wasn't very busy) or something. That is the other thing, charger/charge capacity don't always tell the whole story and in NZ we're seeing batteries as integral part of the fast chargers, resulting in high rates of charge.
Anyway, I do think there are currently more positives than negatives to ultra fast charging infrastructure.

1MW charging doesn't excite me because I'll never use it, and I don't need it anyway. Potential EV drivers need to understand that charging an EV as fast they can pump gas isn't necessary. My Bolt charges no faster than 50 kW, and it's rarely a problem. I usually charge overnight, and when I don't, waiting 30-45 minutes to charge to 80% is not a terrible burden. I have plenty of time to eat, use the bathroom, browse the web or whatever before returning to the road. 150 kW would be an improvement, but I don't see much marginal value in a higher charge rate, not for my needs anyway.

Showing unrealistic video clips for high-speed charging. All video clips were showing AC charging with cables suitable for up to 22 kW. The DC ports were left completely covered. It would be realistic to show at least what a 350 kW Charging plug looks like - plus the super thick cable. I do like the idea of BYD supporting 2 charging ports - so when available at the charging station you can speed up your charge stop.

The practical limit to charging speed has always been stiffness of the charging cable. More copper and more insulation makes the cable stiff, and it must also be cooled. A megawatt has always been the practical limit, at a thousand volts with a thousand amps about all you can get in a hollow wire assembly running hot that isn't too stiff to handle at minus 40 to plug the car in while the cable is cold. With the electronics available decades ago with cost a decreasing issue. The only limit the battery has ever imposed has always been how large the battery had to be to accept the desired charging speed. The other issue of course is that if you have a charging station with 20 charging stalls only a few can charge at a megawatt.
Nothing in this video is pushing near the engineering practical limit. It is all still just cost constrained. I'm underwhelmed.

The dilemma with EV charging infrastructure is that most EV users charge at home over night, so fast chargers are only used by mostly by long distance travellers. If you build a lot of them, as ubiquitous as gas stations, they won't get enough utilization to make a profit. If you don't build as many, only a couple of them along busy highways, then it deters people - especially apartment dwellers from buying EVs because of inconvinience.
I’m not against electric cars, they definitely have their place, but..whilst this sounds all well and good , charging at that rate will generate an insane amount of heat and heat is the natural enemy of anything electrical..
