I was involved in one of the 2,800 companies that left India. Not only the government scam you, the local employees and customers also try their best to bleed you dry. Although a country, goods cannot cross interstate boundaries seamlessly. The feeling is everyone is trying to reap you off. It is truly a money pit and a graveyard for foreign companies. Serve India right when they cannot attract FDI.

This last few years was the last golden opportunity for India to get that investment money when all these foreign companies were trying to exit China. The fact that they couldn't take advantage of China-U.S geopolitical tensions means that they never will. China and the U.S have no time to deal with Indian incompetence and corruption. India will instead by known as the largest exporter of cheap labor to the rest of the world forcing the local population to compete with cheap Indian migrant labor.

In 2005, Ambani's Reliance signed a contract with China's Dongfang Electric Corporation Limited to build a thermal power plant in India. After the contract was signed, Reliance requested a price reduction, but Dongfang refused. Subsequently, in 2009, Reliance signed a new contract with Shanghai Electric at a price 17% lower. Shanghai Electric completed the plant, but Reliance refused to make the payment. In 2019, Shanghai Electric took the case to arbitration in Singapore, but Reliance still refused to pay. India's local high court dismissed Shanghai Electric’s appeal, declaring it illegal. In July 2024, Mumbai police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) registered a case against Shanghai Electric for cheating and forgery. Shanghai Electric never received payment from India and is now being sued in India.

They even treat their citizens this way. The government will come up with nice schemes, even public services that seem like India is really progressing on paper. But wait until you try to obtain those services. All you'll face are unmentioned red tapes and time wasting tactics to deter you from ever wanting to interact with the government agencies in any capacity.

The deeper reason lies in an unsolvable dilemma in India. On one hand, the Indian government recognizes the need for foreign investment to drive industrialization. However, foreign companies would inevitably compete with Indian corporations such as Adani, Ambani, and Tata, threatening their interests. Since Modi has strongly supported these Indian companies—one of the key reasons he rose to power—the government cannot allow foreign firms to dominate local businesses. As a result, the Indian government imposes various regulations, penalties, investigations, and even arrests targeting foreign companies. This situation is unlikely to change as long as Modi remains Prime Minister, as he will not act against the interests of his close allies, such as Adani and Ambani.
